Food For Thought
Have you thought about ways that your entire family can help "go healthy, go green?" Here are a few ideas to get you started:
• Make use of reusable containers to send lunches, leftovers, etc. This means a lot less zip-type bags in landfills.
• Have you changed the light bulbs in your house to compact fluorescent bulbs?
• Do you recycle? Participate in bi-weekly curbside recycling? Do you take glass recycling to a local center?
• Thought about keeping a second recycling container upstairs? It will make it more convenient to recycle tissue boxes, toilet paper tubes and shampoo bottles instead of throwing them into the trash.
• Do you try to re-use things instead of buying everything new?
• Do you use a water canteen/bottle instead of bottled water?
• How many napkins do you go through at your house in a week? Try using cloth napkins.
• Do you use reusable shopping bags? Save thousands of plastic bags from going to the landfills by re-using cloth bags. Still have a ton of plastic bags? Recycle them in the receptacle at your local grocery store or re-use around the house as trash can liners, etc.
Thanksgiving Project
This month, we will collect non-perishable items for the St. Peter's Church food pantry, which is receiving an increased number of requests this time of year. Please bring the following items to chapel to place in our basket.
Sugar, self rising flour, Bisquick or pancake mix, canned tuna, canned chicken, spaghetti, canned pasta (ravioli, etc.), crackers, toilet paper, oil, canned vegetables (potatoes, green beans, carrots, sweet potatoes, corn), cereals and tomato sauce.
HATS OFF to students Tatiana Poggi, Max Ransom, Jackson Wolford (and alum Jordan Brinn), who were nominated to participate in the National Young Scholars Program this past summer. Third grader Jackson Wolford was able to attend the week-long program at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, which taught leadership and problem-solving skills.
HATS OFF to second grader Elizabeth Van Deusen, who was the overall second grade winner (in the fire safety quiz) for Fire Prevention Week. The Chattanooga Fire Department held its annual Fire Prevention Week Awards Ceremony Monday morning at the Fire Training Center and presented all winners with a new bike!
WTCI THANKS: Many thanks to WTCI for allowing "Martha," of "Martha Speaks" to visit our Pre-K and K classes today for a special story time and book for each child. This visit was made possible as an incentive during the Magazine Sale.
Join Martha and more of her friends at WTCI's Family Day, this Sunday, November 8 from noon to 3:00 p.m. at the WTCI studios. Children can meet other PBS Kids characters Caillou, Alpha Pig, Leona and Clifford; see themselves on t.v. and have the opportunity to see a fire truck close-up. WTCI Studios are located at 7540 Bonnyshire Drive, just past the TN Driver's License Testing Center on Bonny Oaks.
