1st grade learns all about digestion
This week, first graders began their study of the human body with the digestive system. First grade teachers Michelle Bailey and Angie Hughes "simulated" a stomach using a plastic bag filled with vinegar and baking soda to replicate the function of the stomach and its role in digestion.
The students were very interested in the experiment and went on further to learn that the small intestine is usually 20 feet long! First graders Ania and William provided a visual for this fact by holding up 20 feet of ribbon for all to see.
After the lesson, students created their own "organs" to paste onto their life-size bodies in the hallway. Stop by and check them out as the classes continue to learn about other systems in coming weeks.
