In conjunction with several Core Knowledge Asian units, St. Peter's School now hosts a meditative Asian garden! The 2nd and 4th grades explore Ancient China and the 5th grade studies Feudal Japan, so it was advantageous to send a teacher, Carol Lockrow, to attend a two week seminar by NCEA (National Consortium for Education about Asia) last summer. UTC professor Lucien Ellington involved teachers of all levels from the surrounding area. One of the perks for each school was the opportunity for $300 towards an Asian project. Combined with $400 from the Class of '06, the Asian garden emerged!
Mrs. Lockrow's proposal was approved by NCEA. Shaped as a quarter circle and backed by a sloping brick wall, the garden features a pond, bog garden, and stone seats for a class with teacher's bench under two large umbrellas. An Asian influence is clear through the fountain, birdfeeder, birdbath, gingko treel, and calligraphy entrance steps. Park and Carol Lockrow provided the manual labor this summer in hopes that many groups will find it a peaceful place for meditating and learning.
Please take time to venture out and explore this beautiful spot. It's located just outside the administrative offices, through the glass door. Many of our classes are already taking advantage of this spot for a variety of purposes. Also, please join me in saying a huge "Thank You" to the Lockrows for all their hard work!
