"Survival" food for TrailWise students

Last week marked the second monthly TrailWise program for second and third graders. In a "Survivor" style session, naturalist-in-residence Mark Warren led students in how ancestors may have survived by cooking acorns for food.

By collecting plentiful acorns, students participated in all aspects of this project. They learned to crack, peel and slice the acorn “meat” before cooking. Of course, they got to taste the [bitter] fruits of their labor!
The students were thrilled to participate in the hands-on project. Whether using actual rocks to "gently crack" the acorn skin or peeling the tannin from the acorn itself, they learned a lot about survival of the fittest.
