April 19th marked the first planting in St. Peter's School Organic Garden!
SPROUTS planted seeds and seedlings in two 4'x8' raised beds. Each bed has a small ledge for student seating. A huge thanks to parent Eddie Grant, who generously donated plant seedlings to get our garden started!
One bed is full of heirloom tomato seedlings and three varieties of basil. The bed also features marigold flowers planted in each of the corners, as SPROUTS learned that marigolds are natural deterrents to hungry bugs who like tomatoes! Tomato varieties include cherry (small), cherokee purple, green and box car willie varieties. Basil varieties include sweet genovese and purple types. This garden will be a true delight for the senses!
The second bed (pictured) features herbs and peppers. Look for the first sprigs of cilantro, rosemary, lavender and chocolate mint in this bed! SPROUTS also plan on planting several berry bushes-- strawberry, blueberry and blackberry. SPROUTS also learned a unique lesson about berries. Did you know you must have 2 blueberry bushes to cross-pollinate and produce fruit? Ms. Schlosser knows, because she's a Master Gardener. We're so glad to have her leading our SPROUTS!
